On this day 80 years ago today our Boeing B-17E, serial number No.41-2446, crash landed into the Agaiambo Swamp, in Papua New Guinea. After running out of fuel during a bombing mission in WWII, the Flying Fortress splashed down in the chest-deep swamp. Settling into thick grass and water she remained in the swamp for 64 years, giving her the nickname SwampGhost The Swamp Ghost was recovered in 2006 and is now located in Hangar 79 of Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Visit our website to learn more about the fascinating story of the Swamp Ghost and visit today.

The addition of the pontoon allowed the VVA-14 to land in the sea. In addition, aircraft can efficiently hover along the surface of the water. The VVA-14 has two turbojet engines in addition to 12 turbofan engines. The aircraft logged a total of 103 flight hours over 107 times before the project was canceled following Bartini's death.
