P-8 Poseidon.

 

The latest P-8 Poseidon to be built for Britain, the eighth of nine, has now landed at the aircraft’s new home in Scotland.

The RAF describe the P-8 as “a multi-role maritime patrol aircraft, equipped with sensors and weapons systems for anti-submarine warfare, as well as surveillance and search and rescue missions.”

Be-12The Be-12 "Chaika" is considered the oldest aircraft in service with the Russian fleet. This type of aircraft made its first flight back in 1960. However, at present, the aircraft have undergone modernization: the equipment has been replaced, and in addition, the aircraft have received the ability to carry improved depth charges, torpedoes and mines on board ... There are more than two dozen combinations of their weapons, which can be varied depending on the tasks assigned.

Typhoon jets and a Voyager tanker have arrived in Oman for Exercise MAGIC CARPET, an annual bilateral exercise between the UK and Oman. The Royal Air Force say here that the Typhoons of II (AC) Squadron RAF Lossiemouth and 12 Squadron RAF Coningsby, and a Voyager from RAF Brize Norton with over 300 RAF support personnel have now started the two-week exercise.

Sailors transport an F-18 training jet onto the flight deck during a fast cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). The fast cruise consists of equipment tests, simulations, scenarios, which refresh and train Sailors for underway periods. Nimitz is currently undergoing a planned incremental availability maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

The Westland Wyvern was a British single-seat carrier-based multi-role strike aircraft built by Westland Aircraft that served in the 1950s, seeing active service in the 1956 Suez Crisis. Production Wyverns were powered by a turboprop engine driving large and distinctive contra-rotating propellers, and could carry aerial torpedoes.

Puma, Tiger and Gazelles in the helicopter hangar of the Mistral-class LHD Tonnerre, deployed off Libya, 2011. The vessels displace 21,300 tons, can carry between 16 and 35 helicopters...depending on size of the helos, can carry up to 900 French Marines and their equipment, have a well deck to accomodate up to 2 LCACs or 4 French CTMs and can cruise at 18 knots. They are 653 feet long and 105 ft wide.

On This Day in 1956 the Royal Navy suffered the first loss in Suez Crisis when a FAA Wyvern was shot down.The pilot ejected and was recovered back to HMS EAGLE. The Wyvern had a troubled service and was only operational with FAA for 5 years, during which time there were 69 accidents.

  • Bartini-Beriev-VVA-14. Only 2 ever made.The aircraft's first flight was held on 4 September 1972. At that time, the prototype would not yet be equipped with a pontoon for water landing. The addition of the pontoon allowed the VVA-14 to land in the sea. In addition, aircraft can efficiently hover along the surface of the water. The VVA-14 has two turbojet engines in addition to 12 turbofan engines. The aircraft logged a total of 103 flight hours over 107 times before the project was canceled following Bartini's death.
