Northrop XP-79B. Designed as an interceptor for the USAAF, it has it's roots in Northrop's MX-324 program. The pilot lay in prone condition, and the aircraft was made of magnesium. Crashed on it's first test flight (9/12/1945), killing test pilot Harry Crosby, who struck the plane while bailing out.
