In 1956: Pan Am Flight 6, a B-377, ditches in the Pacific, all 31 aboard survive. Plane had engine problems, went down 1125 mi West off California, US Coast Guard rescued survivors. The crew´s preparation of passengers and cabin during the emergency was vital to the outcome.

October, 1945, saw the last 'service' launch from a Royal Navy carrier by a Fairey Swordfish took place from HMS Ocean. Though HMS Centaur launched 2 in 1959 during the filming of Sink The Bismarck. In WW2 it destroyed more enemy maritime tonnage than any allied aircraft.

RAF fighters have been scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers north of Shetland. The Typhoon jets launched from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray on Monday morning. The Russian Tu-142 Bear-F and Tu-142 Bear-J aircraft were monitored in international airspace as they passed north of the UK.

  • Bartini-Beriev-VVA-14. Only 2 ever made.The aircraft's first flight was held on 4 September 1972. At that time, the prototype would not yet be equipped with a pontoon for water landing. The addition of the pontoon allowed the VVA-14 to land in the sea. In addition, aircraft can efficiently hover along the surface of the water. The VVA-14 has two turbojet engines in addition to 12 turbofan engines. The aircraft logged a total of 103 flight hours over 107 times before the project was canceled following Bartini's death.
