De Havilland DH-98 Mosquito. The famous British Mosquito - known to many as "Mossie" was a versatile aircraft used extensively during World War II. It was constructed primarily of plywood with a balsa wood core and had excellent speed, altitude and range. Almost 8,000 Mossies were built in Great Britain, Canada, and Australia.

On this day in 1941, saw the first operational success of a Hurricane fighter ship when Lt Everett launched from HMS Maplin to destroy a German Focke Wulf attack. As the Hurricanes were single-use, the pilot had to ditch after their mission, Everett just about escaped and was recovered

  • Bartini-Beriev-VVA-14. Only 2 ever made.The aircraft's first flight was held on 4 September 1972. At that time, the prototype would not yet be equipped with a pontoon for water landing. The addition of the pontoon allowed the VVA-14 to land in the sea. In addition, aircraft can efficiently hover along the surface of the water. The VVA-14 has two turbojet engines in addition to 12 turbofan engines. The aircraft logged a total of 103 flight hours over 107 times before the project was canceled following Bartini's death.
